This dive site, Kőbányai Bányapince, is a unique flooded underground mine system located in Budapest, Hungary. Historically, it was part of a beer factory's operations, but after the factory ceased pumping, groundwater levels rose, creating an extensive network of submerged passages and chambers. Divers navigate through these man-made structures, experiencing a rare overhead environment with crystal clear visibility, exploring the remnants of industrial history beneath the city.
Due to its nature as a freshwater underground mine, Kőbányai Bányapince offers very little in terms of marine wildlife or plant life. The environment is not conducive to a diverse ecosystem, meaning divers should not expect to encounter typical aquatic flora or fauna during their exploration.
The dive site can be visited year-round, although the water temperature consistently remains cold, between 5-10 degrees Celsius, necessitating appropriate thermal protection such as a drysuit. This site is exclusively for advanced divers with specialized mine or cave diving certifications. Its primary appeal is the unique geological and historical landscape rather than marine biology. Freediving is not generally suitable due to the overhead environment and specialized nature of the site.
