This dive site, known as Black Hills, is a prominent seamound located off the southeast corner of Utila, Honduras. The top of the mound sits at around 10 meters, but its sides drop considerably, potentially reaching depths beyond 40 meters. Divers must be prepared for navigation in varying depths and strong currents, which can be present both on the surface and underwater, making it a dynamic and often thrilling dive.
The vibrant ecosystem of Black Hills is home to abundant and healthy coral formations. Divers can expect to encounter large schools of spadefish and jacks, which are a common sight in the strong currents. It is also an excellent location for spotting lionfish, an invasive species, often found amongst the corals.
While specific seasonal highlights are not provided, Utila generally offers good diving conditions year-round, though calmer waters are typically found in the late spring and summer months. Due to the potential for strong currents and deeper sections, this site is best suited for advanced divers. Freedivers with experience in currents may also find the shallower sections appealing, but extreme caution is advised.
