This dive site is Malendure Beach, located on the west coast of Basse-Terre, Guadeloupe, directly facing the Pigeon Islands, which are part of the Cousteau Reserve. It's a public beach characterized by its unusual dark gray sand. Underwater navigation is straightforward due to its shallow nature and relatively flat, seagrass-dominated seabed, making it an easy spot to explore for all levels.
The main attraction at Malendure is the high probability of encountering sea turtles, for which it is a renowned spot, particularly for snorkelers. The seabed primarily consists of seagrass beds, which serve as a feeding ground for these turtles and other small marine life. While the coral reef isn't a primary feature, various small reef fish and other invertebrates typical of Caribbean seagrass habitats can be observed.
The site is suitable year-round, though the best conditions typically occur outside of the hurricane season (June-November). Malendure is highly recommended for snorkelers, beginner divers, and freedivers due to its shallow depth, calm conditions, and excellent opportunities for turtle encounters. It is important to maintain a respectful distance from all marine life, especially the resident sea turtles.
