This dive site, Stingray Alley, is a serene and relatively shallow sand channel extending from the northern tip of Lighthouse Reef in Grenada. Averaging about 9 meters (34 feet) in depth with a maximum of 18 meters, it offers a gentle environment ideal for exploration. Navigation is straightforward, following the sand channel interspersed with seagrass beds and scattered rocks and barrel sponges, which serve as natural hiding spots and micro-habitats.
The site is renowned for its resident marine life, most notably large stingrays, often exceeding 6 feet in wingspan, gracefully gliding across the sandy bottom. Divers can also frequently encounter various eel species, an abundance of juvenile fish taking shelter amongst the rocks and sponges, and fascinating nudibranchs nestled within netted barrel sponges. Occasional sightings of torpedo rays add to the excitement.
The best time to visit Stingray Alley, and Grenada in general, is during the dry season from December to May, when water conditions are typically calm and visibility is excellent. This site is highly recommended for beginner divers due to its manageable depths and mild currents, as well as for macro photographers seeking unique critters. Freedivers will also find it suitable for extended bottom time and observing the larger rays in their natural habitat.
