This dive site explores the San Juan, a small inter-island cargo vessel (80ft / 24m long) resting on a coral rubble sand bottom. Originally at a deeper depth, it was dramatically moved 200ft west and broken up by Hurricane Ivan in 2004. Divers can navigate around the fragmented hull, exploring its various sections which now form an artificial reef structure.
The wreck teems with marine life, offering shelter to numerous lobsters and small nurse sharks, typically up to 2 meters in length. Schools of jacks and grunts frequently circle the structure, while majestic Eagle Rays are often spotted cruising in the vicinity. The surrounding coral rubble provides additional habitat for various fish species.
The San Juan wreck is an excellent dive at a comfortable maximum depth of 25 meters, with an average depth of 12 meters. It's suitable for divers of all levels, including freedivers and snorkelers who can explore the shallower sections and abundant marine life. While no specific best time is mentioned, Grenada generally offers great diving conditions year-round, with calmer seas outside of hurricane season (June-November).
