This dive site, known as Escape Reef, is uniquely positioned as one of the final reef sections on Grenada's Caribbean side before the Atlantic, explaining its name due to the strong, often 2-knot currents encountered here. Diving this site is typically a drift dive experience, where divers are carried along by the flow, offering dynamic encounters and requiring advanced diving skills due to the currents.
The vibrant reef boasts large Elephant ear and barrel sponges providing rich colour and shelter. Depending on the current conditions, divers can witness vast schools of creole wrasse, along with groups of Horseeye jacks. Lucky encounters might also include a school of Barracuda, and the strong currents increase the potential for seeing other pelagic species pass through rapidly.
Given the strong currents, Escape Reef is best suited for experienced divers comfortable with drift diving. While no specific season is highlighted for the best diving, conditions are generally good year-round, though current strength will vary. Divers should be well-prepared with appropriate safety gear for strong currents and maintain excellent buoyancy control to fully appreciate the fast-paced marine action.
