Moorea isn't a dive site; it's a place for whale watching. Humpback whales travel to the warm, protected waters of the lagoon to give birth before returning to the open ocean to rest with their calves.
When the whales are resting in the open ocean, you can observe them. Mother whales often sleep for up to 40 minutes at a time before coming up for air, while their calves need to surface every 15 minutes to breathe. This is a great opportunity to watch the calves, as they're often curious and may even swim toward you. However, it's essential to keep a safe distance from the mother whale. If she feels threatened or annoyed, she may slap her tail or flip over, which can be dangerous.
