This dive site, La Zélée, is a historical wreck located near the port of Papeete, Tahiti. It consists of the scattered remnants of a small French gunboat, the Zélée, which was launched in 1899 and met its fate during the Battle of Papeete in 1914. Divers can explore the various pieces of the wreck, observing how marine life has reclaimed the structure. The site is relatively shallow, with an average depth around 11 meters, making navigation straightforward.
The wreck and surrounding area are teeming with marine life, including numerous lagoon fish that inhabit the corals growing on the Zélée. Divers can also frequently encounter sleeping sharks, adding an exciting element to the dive. Below 25 meters, around 25-27 meters, distinct rose-shaped coral formations are noted, contributing to the site's rich biodiversity.
The Zélée offers a fascinating historical and ecological experience suitable for a wide range of divers. The best time to visit would generally align with Tahiti's dry season (May to October) for optimal weather and visibility, though diving is possible year-round. Its moderate depth also makes it an excellent location for freedivers to explore the wreck and observe the marine inhabitants.
