This dive site, Ile de la Fourmigue (Le Spahis), offers a diverse underwater landscape encompassing scree slopes, narrow canyons, sandy patches, and Posidonia meadows. The site's main attraction lies in the presence of two wrecks, the Spahis and the General Paoli, which provide intriguing exploration opportunities and shelter for marine life. Navigation requires attention to detail due to the varied terrain, but the rewards are well worth the effort.
The marine life is abundant and varied. Divers can expect to encounter a wide range of rockfish, including scorpionfish and caponfish, as well as moray eels, octopus, and various shellfish. Schools of barracudas and groupers are also occasionally sighted. The Posidonia meadows provide a haven for smaller creatures, enhancing the macro photography opportunities.
The best time to visit Ile de la Fourmigue is during the warmer months (May to October) when the water is clearer and warmer, ideal for both diving and freediving. Visibility is generally good, but can be affected by weather conditions. For freediving, planning dives for periods of calm water is advisable. Divers should also be mindful of the potential for mild currents and exercise proper buoyancy control to avoid disturbing the delicate Posidonia meadows.
