This dive site, Anse de la Fausse Monnaie (Fake Money Cove), is situated on the west coast of Port-Cros Island, an area designated as a National Park over 50 years ago. While less frequented than the well-known Plage de la Palud, this natural cove offers a captivating underwater experience. Divers can navigate along rocky drop-offs and explore expansive seagrass beds, all within the protected waters of the national park. There is no specific history or story behind its navigation, but its preserved status ensures a vibrant ecosystem.
Underwater, the site boasts a variety of marine life. Divers can expect to encounter sargo and wrasse, which favor the rocky structures, along with seabream thriving within the seagrass beds. A notable resident is the brown meagre, a species often sought after in Mediterranean waters. The diverse habitats of rock and seagrass support a rich array of smaller fish and invertebrates typical of a healthy Mediterranean ecosystem.
Anse de la Fausse Monnaie is ideal for snorkelers and divers of all levels, particularly beginners due to its shallow depth. The best time to visit is generally from late spring to early autumn when water temperatures are most comfortable. While sunbathers might prefer the nearby sandy Plage du Sud, snorkelers and divers should prioritize this spot for its pristine marine environment. Given its National Park status, respectful interaction with marine life is paramount.
