This dive site, Concha de Perla, is a unique shallow, sheltered lagoon situated next to Puerto Villamil on Isabela Island, Galápagos. As one of the few snorkeling sites explicitly noted as being outside the National Park's direct supervised areas, it offers visitors the rare opportunity for independent exploration without a guide. Underwater navigation is straightforward within the calm, clear waters of the lagoon, making it exceptionally accessible for all levels. There is no specific historical wreck or complex geological history mentioned beyond its natural formation within the volcanic archipelago.
The lagoon is teeming with an incredible array of marine life. Snorkelers and freedivers can expect close encounters with playful sea lions, endemic Galápagos penguins, majestic sea turtles, and marine iguanas often seen feeding or basking near the water's edge. Various fish species, crustaceans, and other invertebrate life also inhabit the calm waters, offering a glimpse into the rich biodiversity of the Galápagos marine ecosystem.
Concha de Perla is an excellent year-round destination, with consistent marine life activity. The calm, shallow conditions make it ideal for beginners and families. For freedivers, the site offers opportunities to practice breath-hold diving in a safe and visually rewarding environment, especially when observing the diverse animals. It's advisable to visit during morning hours for optimal light and potentially fewer crowds. Remember to maintain respectful distance from wildlife and avoid touching any marine creatures.
