About this dive site

This dive site features the Astron, a 300-foot Russian cargo ship that sank in 1979 while delivering corn to Cuba. Situated just offshore from Punta Cana, a portion of the wreck remains above water, making it easy to navigate and access as a shore dive. The shipwreck provides a fascinating historical structure to explore.

The wreck has become a thriving artificial reef, home to diverse marine life. Divers can expect to encounter nurse and reef sharks, potential eagle rays, and green turtles. Abundant fish species include snapper, angelfish, grunts, and grouper, along with various anemones.

With its shallow depths (max 13m, avg 6m), the Astron is highly suitable for beginners, snorkelers, and freedivers. As a popular Caribbean destination, the dive site is generally accessible year-round, offering clear waters and a rewarding experience for all levels.
