This dive site, Sandy’s Plateau, is a vibrant coral reef located off the coast of Curaçao, nestled between Jan Thiel beach and Mambo Beach. It is exclusively accessible by boat. The site features a gently sloping plateau rich in hard and soft corals, with a distinctive small overhang in the shallows that often provides shelter for schools of fish. Navigation is straightforward, generally following the reef structure.
Divers can expect to encounter a diverse array of marine life. The reef is teeming with various hard corals, including impressive Elkhorn and Pillar corals, alongside numerous sponges and soft corals. Among the corals, residents like Spotted Drums, Trunkfish, and various Filefish (Slender, Scrawled, and Whitespotted) are common. Octopus can be found, and lucky divers might even spot an occasional seahorse.
Sandy's Plateau offers excellent conditions for both scuba divers and freedivers, especially given its relatively shallow average depth. The diverse coral formations and abundant small marine life make it a superb location for macro photography. While the site is suitable year-round, conditions in Curaçao are generally calm with good visibility, making any time a good time to visit for an enjoyable and relaxed dive experience.
