This dive site, Marie Pampoen, offers a tranquil and accessible shore diving experience, perfect for divers of all levels. Entry is from a small harbor, after which divers navigate approximately 20-30 meters seaward to discover a fascinating artificial reef. This unique underwater landscape is formed from an assortment of dumped cars, cranes, and various other scrap materials, which over time have created a complex habitat for marine life. The site also features a successful coral outplant project, contributing to its ecological richness.
The artificial reef and surrounding areas are home to a vibrant array of Caribbean marine life. Divers can expect to encounter typical hard and soft corals, various snapper species, colorful angelfish, schools of grunts, and graceful parrotfish. Eels are commonly sighted tucked among the structures, and lucky divers may even spot large tarpon lurking around the artificial reef formations. The coral outplant from the local Coral Restoration project further enhances the biodiversity.
Marie Pampoen is an excellent year-round destination, particularly appealing for its calm conditions and ease of access. The site is highly suitable for both snorkeling and freediving due to its shallow average depth and rich marine environment close to the surface. It's a fantastic spot for photographers interested in both wide-angle shots of the artificial reef and macro photography of the thriving coral and small critters. Divers should be mindful of potential boat traffic near the harbor entry point.
