This dive site, La Corniza, is located off the northern sector of Isla Fuerte, Colombia. It features a distinctive reef platform that transitions into a captivating wall, descending from approximately 8 meters to a maximum of 19 meters. Divers can navigate along the wall, exploring various coral ledges and adjacent limestone sandy bottoms. There is no known specific history or story associated with the naming of the site, but its geological structure forms a natural "cornice" or ledge.
The marine life at La Corniza is diverse and engaging. Frequent sightings include nurse sharks resting on the sandy bottoms and stingrays at deeper sections around 19-21 meters. The wall itself is richly colonized by black whip corals, which provide a habitat for smaller creatures such as tiny pencil shrimps, making it an excellent spot for macro photography.
The best time to visit La Corniza is generally during Colombia's dry season, typically from December to April, when water conditions are calmest and visibility is at its best. Divers can enjoy exploring both the macro and wide-angle possibilities here. Freedivers will find the depths suitable for practice and exploration of the wall's upper sections and reef platform.
