This dive site, Ilha do Farol within the Alcatrazes Archipelago, is Brazil's most pristine marine area in São Paulo state. Historically, diving was restricted for over 30 years due to protections by the Brazilian Navy (MB) and Esec Tupinambás, reopening only in December 2018. Divers can explore a vibrant underwater environment that remains largely untouched, with navigation typically involving boat dives around the island's rock formations and reef areas.
The rich ecosystem supports a diverse array of marine life. During navigation to and from the site, dolphins, whales, and orcas are frequently sighted. Underwater, divers can expect to encounter various reef fish species, crustaceans, and potentially larger pelagics. The site is also notable for the largest frigate forest in Latin America, indicating a thriving and complex habitat.
The best time to visit Alcatrazes is during warmer, calmer months, though specific seasons for migratory species like whales and orcas would offer peak big animal encounters. With a maximum depth of 14 meters and an average of 7 meters, it is highly suitable for both scuba divers of all levels and freedivers. Snorkelers will also find the shallow, clear waters appealing. Divers should be aware of conservation efforts and abide by all regulations to help preserve this unique Brazilian treasure.
