This dive site, Munk's Haven, holds the distinction of being the most westerly dive location on the idyllic, uninhabited islet of Klein Bonaire. It is characterized by a unique topography that begins with a gently sloping sandy bottom, ideal for easy entry and navigation, gradually transitioning into a vibrant coral reef. The reef maintains a gentle incline until approximately 12 meters, where it then slopes more steeply into deeper waters. There is no specific historical account or notable story tied to this particular site, but its location within the protected Bonaire National Marine Park ensures its pristine condition.
Divers at Munk's Haven can anticipate encountering a rich diversity of marine life typical of Bonairean reefs, encompassing both the creatures of the sandy flats and the inhabitants of a flourishing coral ecosystem. A notable feature at deeper depths is an active cleaning station, which attracts various reef fish for a good scrub. Common sightings include numerous species of parrotfish, angelfish, butterflyfish, damselfish, snappers, and grunts. On the sandy bottom, one might spot garden eels or flounder. The reef itself boasts a healthy array of hard corals such as brain coral, elkhorn, and staghorn, interspersed with colorful soft corals like sea fans and various sponges, as well as an abundance of smaller crustaceans.
Munk's Haven is an excellent dive site year-round, benefiting from Bonaire's consistently warm waters and superb visibility. It is particularly recommended for those seeking a relaxed dive or snorkel, given its calm conditions and accessible depths. Freedivers will also find the gentle slope and clear water highly appealing for breath-hold exploration. As this is a boat-access-only site, divers should be aware of potential boat traffic when ascending or at the surface. It is a fantastic site for both wide-angle reef photography and close-up macro shots.
