This dive site, Wounded Knee, is located within the isolated Gingerbread grounds of the Bahamas, known for its excellent lobstering and spearfishing opportunities. The underwater topography is characterized by very high profile coral heads that rise from a white sand and turtle grass bottom, offering numerous captivating swim-throughs for exploration. Divers can easily navigate around these coral formations, which often top out at shallow depths of 4.5-6 meters, making it a comfortable and engaging dive experience.
The vibrant ecosystem supports a diverse range of marine life including snappers, hamlets, and flounder that frequent the reef structures. Large species like grouper, hogfish, and majestic loggerhead turtles are also common sightings. Smaller inhabitants such as tilefish, jawfish, and garden eels can be found in the sandy areas, while loads of juvenile fish species congregate around the coral head tops, adding to the rich biodiversity.
Wounded Knee offers an excellent dive year-round, with the warmer months providing the calmest conditions. The shallow depths and abundant marine life make it a perfect spot for underwater photography, particularly for wide-angle shots of the coral heads and macro opportunities for the juveniles and smaller critters. Both scuba divers and freedivers will appreciate the ease of access to fascinating features and the generally mild currents, ensuring a relaxing and rewarding exploration of this vibrant Bahamian reef.
