This dive site, known as Sonnstein, offers a challenging and rewarding deep dive experience along a dramatic steep face on the shore of Lake Traunsee. Divers navigate along the impressive wall, exploring beautiful overhangs and intricate small grottos that punctuate the rock formations. The dive follows the natural continuation of the small Sonnstein rock formations underwater, presenting a varied and interesting topography.
While the site is not known for an abundance of fish, divers can observe various mussels and sponges adhering to the wall, adding subtle life to the rock formations. The freshwater environment supports a unique ecosystem distinct from marine sites, with these invertebrates being the primary visible marine life.
This dive is strictly for safe and experienced divers due to its depth and complex topography. The best time to visit would be during periods of good visibility, typically outside of heavy rainfall or meltwater runoff. Freedivers can also appreciate the stunning wall structure and depth, provided they have appropriate experience and safety protocols for such deep freshwater environments.
