This dive site, the Silbersee, is an artificial lake located west of Villach, Austria, close to the Drau river. Created in the 1970s from groundwater gravel extraction, it offers a tranquil freshwater diving experience. Divers can easily access the water from the eastern platform or near the "Silbersee Ranch" restaurant on the southern side. The site is shallow, with an average depth of 3 meters, making navigation straightforward.
The Silbersee is home to a variety of freshwater fish species, providing opportunities for observing aquatic life. Species include rainbow trout, pike, catfish, aitel, barbel, gudgeon, bleak, carp, roach, rudd, tench, and perch. Crayfish are also present, adding to the smaller creatures that can be found in the lake.
The best time to visit the Silbersee for diving is during the warmer months, typically from late spring to early autumn, for more comfortable water temperatures. It is an excellent spot for beginner divers, training exercises, and those looking to practice freshwater diving skills. Freedivers will also find the shallow depths suitable for breath-hold practice. Given its accessibility and varied fish life, it's a pleasant local spot for relaxed aquatic exploration.
