This dive site, Hinkelsteine, is known for its unique underwater landscape in an Austrian freshwater lake. Divers can explore three natural menhirs (Hinkelsteine), with the largest starting at 18 meters and extending beyond the dive site's maximum depth of 27 meters. Since 2018, the site has been enhanced with three life-size wooden figures built around the menhirs, adding an artificial reef element within this UNESCO World Heritage Site.
In the shallow areas, divers can encounter pike and various shoals of fish. Deeper around the menhirs, eel rods are often found lying in the sand, indicating the presence of eels and other bottom-dwelling life typical of freshwater environments.
The best time to visit Hinkelsteine to observe marine life is during autumn, when fish activity tends to be highest. This site is specifically suitable for advanced divers due to the depths involved, offering a unique blend of natural geological formations and historical-artistic underwater features for exploration.
