This dive site is the wreck of the three-masted steel merchant sailing ship "Andes", which sank in Deep Bay, Antigua in 1905 after catching fire. The wreck lies at a maximum depth of 14 meters, making it accessible to divers of all experience levels, though boat access is required. Navigation is relatively straightforward, as the wreck is a prominent feature on the seabed. The history of the ship and its cargo of pitch adds an intriguing element to the dive.
The marine life around the Andes wreck is diverse and abundant. Numerous reef fish inhabit the wreck and the surrounding area, offering ample opportunities for observation and photography. Stingrays are known to frequent the sandy patches near the wreck. Various coral species and other invertebrates likely contribute to the overall biodiversity of this site.
The best time to visit Antigua and Barbuda for diving is generally during the calmer months of winter and spring (December to April). Visibility is often best during these periods. The site is suitable for both scuba diving and freediving, with the shallower depth and typically calm conditions making it ideal for those new to freediving. Remember to check local weather conditions and current strength before each dive.
